After completing the breath, remove the mouthpiece and breathe normally before repeating the exercise according to the prescribed programme. The appropriate target volume, number of repetitions and frequency of use should be individualised rather than determined simply by the device's maximum 5000mL scale. IMPORTANT: An incentive spirometer is a breathing exercise device and is not a diagnostic spirometer for pulmonary function testing.
